How Long to Chant?

What to Think When Chanting and How Long To Chant

by King Sidharth

in Q&A

With all the wonderful emails and comments that I am receiving, above all – the awesome questions, I thought I will answer them in posts so everyone can enjoy the discussion. Here is recent one by Bev on our post Basic of Chanting:

Question:

I’ve practiced chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo very inconsistently for about 4 years. Some benefits I’ve noticed include an improved mood and new opportunities. Recently, I’ve found myself surrounded by conditions I wish to change drastically and swiftly. So, I have two questions:

  1. When I chant, am I suppose to be visualizing what I want or am I to be clear minded and maybe focus on the sound of the chant?
  2. How many hours per day should one try to chant in order to effect drastic change is his/her life.

Answer:

Dear Bev,

You’ve been doing a really wonderful, effective and powerful practice. It’s life changing really.

  1. When you are chanting there is no need of thinking anything, just focus on chanting. Feel the sounds and vibrations arising. If you’re not thinking about a negative thought, your vibration is going to rise to its natural positive place. That’s the basis of chanting. It is good to think thoughts that feel good but only if they come naturally. Don’t force yourself to think something, if it’s positive then let it be and if it isn’t just let go and focus on chanting.Example: You are chanting and thoughts of bad things happening come to your mind, don’t force yourself to turn them around – just focus on Nam Myho Renge Kyo or Ghonzon (if you are praying to Ghonzon). Other case if the thoughts of good things come naturally then let it be.
  2. Effective time starts with 5-10 minutes to make it a habit. Once it is a regular habit then you will find your own time period of change. You will feel like chanting in middle of something and you will go on for hours sometimes and some other days just three Daimoku’s will be enough. (Chanting Nam-Myho-Ho-Renge-Kyo is called Daimoku). So just focus on making it a habit, you will find your perfect timing yourself. You will ‘feel like it’.

I hope that answers your questions and with every answer comes more questions so feel free to ask if there are any other questions. Questions are not only welcome but wanted here. :)

I will try and go into details in next few posts on chanting.

    Hi Sid,

I've chanted on and off for a few years. I've heard chanting liked to a spinning top – it takes a while to get the momentum going but when the inertia is strong enough the top continues to spin for an indefinite time.

I've been inspired from chanting for hours at a time. Other times a certain chant doesn't feel as comfortable and nothing seems to happen. Either way, try not to judge. That's the essence of life really; don't judge. Everything *is*, whether it's meditating, chanting, or living.

How often do you chant buddy? I've focused on meditating while acting only when inspired recently, which is the only acting we should all be taking :)

First thing first! I am really sorry for late reply!

    That's an interesting analogy!

Ah yes, chanting sometimes can feel a bit weird. It's more of a faith thing – developing and directing your belief system. More like emptying yourself. it'd take a book to describe the science of chanting.

I usually chant for half an hour as a practice. I am active member of Soka Gakkai International. Google it ;)

    Cheers!

Whoops! Forgot all about asking that Q. But thanks for the response Sidharth. I got a lot out of the first answer on mental focus. But to be honest I'm still unclear about how often I “should” be chanting to effect change in my life. I used to feel positive change happening more when I chanted but not so much anymore. It just doesn't seem as effective. Weird. Note; I moved during that period of time and usually end up facing a WINDOW or focusing at a point several feet away. Today I will try 1) clearing my mind/no focus on the subject matter I need sorted out and 2) I will focus on the wall about arm's distance away. P.S. Not a member of SGI P.S.S. Also, I think window's can be tricky. Feng Shui says they let thoughts fly away. I say at night they turn into mirrors.

I have known of NMRK for many years.
I have practiced meditation and chanting
    for many years as well.
Recently, I just “felt” drawn to beginning
this practice in earnest after chatting
briefly with a practitioner who had 20+ years
of experience. Thus far I have had one
interesting experience. I chanted before I
went to sleep at 11:30 PM PST Saturday night.
I had to wake up at 4:00 AM PST.
Instead I was WIDE awake at 2:50 AM PST.
I feel pretty good but, seeing as it is Sunday morning,
I am going back to sleep.
Thank you for posting this site.
I will continue to practice and research this matter.
    Namaste’
