Music for Meditation or Meditation with Music

Ultimate Guide to Meditating with Music

by King Sidharth

in The Basics

This should have been one of the first posts on Meditation Rocks! but I was thinking of doing some experiments before I publish this. So here it is – Meditating with Music.

The Music

Music is just awesome, isn’t it? I mean life without music, wouldn’t exist. And when I say music I just don’t mean out iPod playlist, or the party music, I am also talking about the cosmic music, the background humming of universe, the birds chirping the dogs barking it’s all music!

So music is know for relaxing and making us feel good – yes even sad songs can make your mood lighter – that’s the power of music. And we’ve been talking about power of meditation since quiet a while – so imagine what could happen when you put these two together. It Rocks!

How to Meditate with Music

So here is how to do it. Select a song with tempo of 60 beats per min. – usually all love songs (not rock music) are like that, classics are good too. A rule of thumb is tap your feet with music beats – if you are tapping once every second then it’s good to go.

  • So you have your music – now play it. Not to loud, just so faint that you can hardly hear the lyrics. Remember, it’s not sing-my-fav-song-time it’s meditate-with-my-fav-music-time. So don’t loose the focus.
  • Play the music at low volume so you can barely hear the lyrics.
  • Sit, stand or lay with your back straight.
  • Close your eyes and focus on faint sound of music.
  • You might be tempted to sing, or you might remember some related event but as soon as you find yourself wandering off just release the thought and refocus on music.
  • Feel the soft vibes entering your body.
  • If you get sensitive enough (with practice) though the music isn’t loud you will feel the vibes throughout your body.
  • As soon as the song ends, slowly open your eyes. It is important that you don’t play any music for next one min. and just sit and feel the awesomeness.

That’s all!

It’s great fun, try it.

How it Works

As I’ve always explained. Meditation is about focusing (not concentrating) or completely expanding your consciousness on something that won’t grow or attract much thought – like music, mantra or breathe.

So here we are focusing on faint music, and since it is faint – you are less likely to wander. And as you enter the meditative state, you will feel the vibes. As your follow them you will get in sync with vibrational nature of who you are. And as that happens – you return to your natural state of well being – the emotion of relief or contentment that you feel will let you know.

So it’s pretty easy and fun, go give it a try. And let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Sid! Great! Or I shall say, it's just AWESOME!

Meditating with music is great fun. As you said, when are meditative state, everything seems good, even the bark of a dog too! But to reach the meditative state the bark of the dog will not help you do that. So music is great.

One more thing. Usually the songs are around 5 minutes long, and meditating 5 minute is not what I do. And changing the track again and again will not be a great idea. Oh wait! I got my answer!! There are two options:
    a. Make a playlist
    b. Put that song on repeat.

Making a playlist is great idea. But putting the same song on repeat will be even more helping because you'll be on the same vibration. As every song has a slightly different vibration.

    Great post! :)

    Hey Manav,
Great to hear back again from you.

I am glad you really liked the idea and the post.

Yea repeating the song does help because the song is not important, and if it's repeating – you will be less interested in it and it will help you go deeper into meditation.

Thanks for commenting. I am sure you will take out 5 min to comment, if you like or dislike the post coz what you say really matters.

    Enjoy.

Very good post Sid. Music meditation is a feeling like going on a 'trip' in your mind. Music without lyrics are usually better. Recorded mantra chants/ragas or Trance/techno will suit, music like buddha bar. There is also a music genre called 'trip hop', bands like Massic Attack. It all depends on individual taste of music I guess. I mostly listen to fusion music. Here are some of the tracks I've meditated on this month (Have been listening to indian fusion lately):

Juno Reactor Vs Don Davis – Navras –
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOtoIBrBAYE (one of my favorite)

    Red indian sounds –
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4n5oWxT9MU

    Colonial Cousins – Indian Rain
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49rRK8slUaY

Naan Kadavul – Om Siva Om
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAfZUCS8bQM

Apache Indian – Om Namuh shivaya
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dzm1oxXbGQA

    Morning Raga – Mahaganapathim
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgnN_-9tmhQ

Do share if you have been listening to any interesting tracks.

    Ram!

W0ot!!! You are one wonderful friend that everyone'd want to have! Absolutely true. Music with no lyrics are way better. And thanks for sharing the awesome information about 'trip hop' I will research more and write about it.

Indian Fusion? Not really gave it a try, I am stuck (enjoying rather) Indian Classical music.

Thanks for sharing the awesome tracks man. I am going to try each one of them. Yea, I shared my fav. tracks in the post above. But I really love these 2:

    1. Heart Sutra Chanting (Buddhist – Tibetan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c9-XaA2f00
    2. And Marubihag (Something similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnN7BL1PInc )

I think we should create a page where we can suggest music for Meditation – paid / free (YouTube etc.). What do you think?

Hi Sid, I'm happy to contribute! There is a world of music to explore and experience. I have many GBs of music on my laptop. For an enhanced experience, a good mp3 player with earphones thats light and comfortable when wearing (no stress on the ears) is the best choice. Meditating on music when you are on nature travels/in the hills can be a nice experience too. Different sounds give different vibrations and feeling/absorbing them can be bliss!

If the track is abit heavy, it can be a source of motivation/energy( or it may be just me). E.g: Navras: Chorus is the sanskrit upanishad mantra 'asato ma sadgamaya' (Lead me from darkness to light. From ignorance to truth..).

Keep an ear out for songs from Bands like Shakthi, Mynta, Karnatrix, or Musicians like Mandolin U. Srinivas, Ravi Shanker, Zakir Hussain, Guitar Prasanna. There are many many more though. During my visit to India, I bought a cd titled 'Jazz for meditation', hoping to start on that today.

'meditation music suggestions' is a good idea. Essentially there are different types of vibes: mellow, nature, fusion, even dark vibes. Under refined divisions, suggestions can be made. So that the meditator can try the song depending on what 'trip' he or she wants to go on.

I use a free software called Ares to download songs, heres the link – http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

Wow! Cool… there are other file sharing software too. Just a word of advice – keep it legal :)

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

Man, you seem to be really into meditation and music – that's super cool! You are very right – different songs give different feels and vibes, and it's good to experiment with different music.

Those are really wide list of artists you follow. I am pumped up to do the page 'Music for Meditation'!!! Thanks a ton for sharing awesome list man.

I have “Asto ma Sadh Ghamaya….” track in Indian Classical music.

Perfect, different type of music suggestions for different people wanting to go on different 'trips'. I will start building that page soon. Will need your help so you will receive a mail asking for help in a few weeks.

    This is exciting!
