CyclingMost people do not associate cycling with meditation. Meditation is a way of relaxation and cycling is an exercise! People who know me well know that I am an avid cyclist. What most people do not know about me is that I am also a committed meditator, albeit an non-traditional one. I meditate while I cycle! This might seem preposterous, but it is not.

Prerequisites to meditate while cycling:

  1. Weather: Weather is an extremely important factor to consider while cyclomeditating (let’s stick with that term). Ideally, the weather should be cool but not chilly. A slight drizzle is an added bonus.
  2. Eating: Do not overeat before cycling. Blood gets diverted to your stomach instead of your brain, hindering the process of meditation. It is ideal to slightly under eat, but not so much as to feel hungry.
  3. Clothes: The clothes you wear should be easy and comfortable.
  4. Skill: You should be a reasonably skillful rider of a cycle. Coz meditation can make you feel so relaxed that you stop cycling consciously.

Methods of Meditating while cycling:

  1. The Weather Method: For this method to work, Prerequisite one must be present. As you cycle in the cool weather, bring out the stress and troubles in your mind and feel the cool weather wash them away, leaving you refreshed. It helps if you are in the countryside or at least in a spot with greenery and little/no traffic.
  2. The Subway Method: For this method to work you need a subway which is dark in the middle. Cycle fast towards the subway. Stop pedaling as you enter the subway. Bring out the crease lines of your brain to the fore. As you pass through the dark center of the subway while going downward you will feel a sense of light headedness and feel your troubles being washed away and enter a meditative state.
  3. The Bridge Method: The same as the subway method, inverted.
  4. The Rhythm Method: Watch someone cycling in front. Concentrate on his foot movement while pedaling. Try to consciously and slowly emulate it. Try to achieve the exact same pace. You will feel your mind relaxing and entering a meditative state.
