Finding Time to Meditate

3 Sure-Shot Ways to Find Time To Meditate

in Overcoming Obstacles

Anita is one of the most regular readers of Meditation Rocks! No, you won’t find her commenting she is a bit shy about that but she writes me mails – everyday, we discuss all sorts of things – from meditation to money. Ideas for so many posts came when we were talking.

Thank you Anita for this awesome friendship that we share and thanks for letting me publish your name.

Anita has two kids – both of them under 4 and she has hard time managing them. Every time she’d mention stress in her emails – I’d suggest only one thing – meditation. She tried so hard, she said, and finally gave up:

Ok, It’s official. I give up. I can’t distress unless I meditate, and I need time for meditation and I am stressed because I’ve no time!

This seems to be catch 22 situation – doesn’t it? If you are facing same problem, then you are not alone. Good news: there are sure-shot way to deal with this problem.

1. Stop Trying

Really folks, it’s time that you stop trying to meditate. There is no try and when you don’t try and just let it be – it’s meditation. It really is simpler than it seems to be.

Meditation is doing nothing and since doing nothing, everything about it is opposite of doing something. That means:

  1. It doesn’t take effort.
  2. It doesn’t take ‘mind’.
  3. It doesn’t take ‘thought’
  4. It doesn’t take negativity or positivity.

And so on… c’mon be creative and add to the list.

2. Forget it

The best way to meditate is to forget it. Don’t put it in your to-do list. Because it is not a ‘do’ it’s opposite of ‘do’.

Instead of all this ‘make it ritual’ stuff – let this be a fun sneak out that you do every now and then – whenever you feel like.

3. Meditate Whenever & Wherever You Want

Yes, it’s your secret ritual which you do whenever and wherever. It does help to have a meditation corner but what about whole world as your meditation corner?

Whenever you feel like meditating (hint: you always feel like meditating) just focus on something that doesn’t have a tendency to grow in thought likebreathe, meaningless sound, natural sound, tree, sky … and there you are! Hmmmmmm…. It feels good!

Here are some more things you can try:

Conclusion

Meditation is timeless, you can never find time to meditate. That’s why when you meditate – time flies by so quickly.

The only way I can suggest you is: stop thinking about meditation in terms of another thing to check off list, take it easy and let it be fun. And do it whenever and wherever. That’s how it is supposed to be.

And when it’s fun, time will make sure you meditate.

Namaste

I totally agree with this dude. Meditation is not 'work' it's like taking a vacation (Though for a small time!) from what you HAVE to do. You don't HAVE to do it, 'coz you WANT to do it. That's the mantra.

Thanks for writing this awesome post! :)

    You nailed it!
    You are welcome, always.

Meditation is not a task. It's……nothing really.

We're so used to labelling thing as 'this' or 'that'. Meditation is not about labels, or action, or thinking. It's sitting and watching, without getting in the way. And when you get in the way, you're no longer meditating.

I like to meditate in the morning, evening, and now I take breaks on the hour to draw back from my work. Not meditating per 'se, just pulling back from activity to look out of the window. Come to think of it, I guess it is mediation ;)

It's so exciting to think of meditation – the art of doing nothing. Nothing is so much better than something.

It's wonderful meditation you do Ryan, it happens to me many times a day I happen to look out of window and my mind is no more. I am no more and then after a while I will come back to walking conscious refreshed and re-energized and above all I come back as real me.

Very well explained Sid. How we look at 'meditation' is very important. The whole idea is not to make any effort on any level (mental/physical).

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

Just no mental effort – you might be making physical effort – it hardly accounts for anything (unless you are practicing Yoga / Pranayam).

  • Ram

Yoga / Pranayam is Kriya (doing). Meditation is non doing. 'Effort' in essence would be anything that requires thought.

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

Yoga is union of Mind-Body-Spirit . Meditation is integral part of Yoga. Pranayam is somewhere between. The founding father of Yoga, Maharishi Patanjali stated that to practice Asna without meditation is of no use. Hence Yoga includes meditation but not otherwise.

Thanks for the video, will watch the it soon. Just quoting the highest authority for now.

Was in middle of it. I think we can really discuss this one. Do you want to do it here or in special post? He stirred up a lot and I really agreed with him on so many points – including Patanjali was not first one. (Lord Shiva was – which he missed)

Anways, before Patanjali – yoga was considered to be a practice of body / or mind /or spirit – they were looked up as 3 different ways of salvation. Patanjali unified them and said that one cannot exist independently has human form.

Respected Dr., in the video, agrees that Kriya Yoga makes you healthy – I won't go in details but healthy body follows a healthy state of mind and thought and pure allowance of spirit. And body cannot be healthy until they are achieved. Kriya Yoga is much more than Asna, Pranyam – you got the body part together but where does the focus of consciousness go?

Try Sudarshan Kriya, you will experience what I am talking about. Meditation in state of Yoga – union not separation.

    Interesting subject to talk about.

I attended the Art of Living program in 2003 :) I totally agree, Sudarshan Kriya is very good for health. Meditation as a primary state of mind suggests there is clearly no thought, no yoga. Breathing doesnt require thought. But thoughtful breathing is Pranayama – a means of internal work out (exercise). The state of mind after pranayama can commonly be called a 'high' or 'bliss'. Meditating on that mind is kriya meditation. By focusing on the breath, the mind gets disciplined so that it does not wander off into thoughts for non-meditating folks. So it helps/makes it easy to meditate. This is what I think.

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

What I think is a bit different. I call it conscious breathing not thoughtful breathing – for there is no thought. The state of no-mind that I experience during Sudarshan Kriya is very identical to Zazen and is definitely meditative. For I tend to loose awareness of myself as an individual and have this sense of eternal being-ness and wholeness – and that clearly is meditation. However I realize that only coming out of it – that's interesting.

Sudarshan Kriya, for me is mantra meditation to begin with (and it begins with Pranayaam, yes) and ends with thoughtlessness.

    More in mails

  • Ram

Perhaps 'thoughtful' is a loose term to use, apologies. Accounting that you know you are doing 'an exercise' and keeping track of count of asanas/breaths (even estimates) and focusing on expansion/contraction of breath in various speed levels… I think thats too many things to do when 'meditating'. What comes afterwards after that process is meditative, when you rest.. smiling.. thoughtless. awesomeness. talk to you soon.

Guess what? After you commented I received your mail and another mail from a reader I never knew was reading us. He said he was really interested in what we were discussing and should keep it online so he can enjoy. I've invited him to join us in.

So yea we agree on that afterward follows a blissful state of meditation. My only point is that 'the counting of breath', 'exerpiecing passage of time' is same as focusing on breathe. You got to put your conciseness mind somewhere and usually it is focused on something that doesn't grow – breath, counting, mantra, mandala etc.

Same with Sudarshan Kriya – when they teach you – it's mantra – later it's counting and – later it's yourself (it took me an year to realize that). Sudarshan Kriya is meditation which starts with Pranayam (blending of meditative state and physical yoga).

IMHO, Yoga is union of meditation, physical exercise and mental exercises hence binding soul, body and mind. The only common thread is 'breath' or 'Praan' (life force) in Sanskrit.

    What say you?

  • Ram

aha cool! Hello friend! I have noticed in the comments of one of the posts, a reader of this blog has gone to the Art of Living course, but that is a female. Is it Manav?

I agree with your definition of Yoga. But purely based on Kriya yoga as per our discussion, is about exercises (physical+mental) and not meditation. By definition kriya means “to do, to make an effort”. Meditation is introduced afterwards, upon a repoptimized meditationfriendly mind (I just made up those two words) :)

  • http://www.KingSidharth.com King Sidharth

No that's not Manav, the other one is Pooja Nayak – she did course. No other reader is Art of Living member. I would have known. The one who is following our discussion is Shiraz.

So we get it. I wasn't talking about Kriya yoga specifically. So it clears all. Doens't it. I totally agree with translation of Kriya hence meaning of Kriya yoga. Love the two new words too! :P

  • Ram

Crystal! :) and Greetings to Shiraz!
