I don’t know about you but I can’t imagine my life without all the fun of traveling. You get to learn so much about people, cultures, entrepreneurs and food. One of bad ass habits is to meditate every where I go. It is fun to meditate in new environment and new energies.

It is summer time so most probably you will be traveling; now that doesn’t mean that you have to leave your meditation at home. We can meditate anytime and anywhere, remember? So here are a few tips for meditating when you are out.

There is no fun in meditating in your hotel room, obviously you want to get out in open and meditate. In that case make sure that your things are packed and closed to you securely.

Make sure you carry a light weight mat with you or maybe a simple piece of cloth which you can spread out on any surface and mediate.

It is a good idea to bring your favorite music along but nothing is as much fun as meditating to new sounds in new area. Being the awesome one that you are, you can even meditate in the noisiest places.

I don’t know any place which have rules against meditation but make sure local law is not against such practices in public.

Try looking for a local meditation group or retreat and plan do visit that place. Talk to people about how they meditate, what got them interested and how they feel about it? Share your idea, URL of this blog (www.meditationrocks.us) and connect to them. You belong to a worldwide community of meditators.

Often people end up with upset stomach when they have to eat out too much. Meditation can do wonders there. Just feel how relaxed your energy system and digestive system is when meditating, you can fake it too.

Traveling, sometimes, is too tiring. 10 minutes meditation before you go to sleep can do wonders for you.

Not related to meditation but it is summer, so drink a lot. Have you ever tried mindfulness when drinking water? (Good idea for a post later, what say you?).

Take a technology break; I had to take a week-long technology break because my laptop charger was broken. I can’t tell you how refreshed mind gets. Instead try connecting with people mentally, yea telepathy. (Hey I should write about that one too).

Use your creative arts to capture the moments. Pain, make a video, write a poem just do anything and frame those memories. Anything that takes you to your full potential is meditation too.

Have fun. Because life is supposed to be fun.

Bonus Tip: Wear cool meditation rocks T-Shirt on your vacation. It will be so easier for other people who love meditation to find you. Who knows you might end up as their meditation guru?

This post rocks, I can tell.

In my first video on Meditation Rocks! I talked about meditation inducing similar effects as drugs but without any side-effects. Since then, I’ve had this discussion with so many.

I thought it’d be good to put up an explanation. Not that I owe you one, but because you wanted one.

Drugs diffuse your focus so you cannot think in detailed way you are accustomed to. And meditation does similar thing – it points your focus to such a non-expanding thought that you almost think nothing. As a result – both happy and unhappy thought cease.

Both diffuse focused thinking to the point where it is hardly noticeable. But Marijuana users don’t agree that it is as much fun because meditation still needs conscious effort and that is a good thing.

As you consciously practice mediation your control over your mind increases. Now a far better thing would be to practice a good feeling emotion rather than meditation, but that is a bit off tack here.

So meditation can be a great escape for people who are seeking relief from drug addiction. Just start mediating. You will have your control back.

What do you think?

Meditate more effectively with these simple tips. Take your practice to next level.

I love weekends! Don’t you? Last week when I posted photos of my meditation corner, I got a lot of mails from you guys (please comment too?) about all the ideas and questions. Love your email people – keep them coming.

So after answering all the emails I found that there was a common thread going on in all the emails. I just answered different emails each one with at least one tip to be more effective meditator. So I thought, why not put them together and share them with you? Here they are:

Practice Meditation Daily: I cannot emphasize this point enough. Many people start with meditation but don’t practice it enough to make it a habit. It usually takes doing something for 30 days to make it a habit. That’s how long you need to use your will power.

Make New Friends: Meditation is not just about sitting in closed closet – go out and mix with people. Why not talk to people you find here on Meditation Rocks!? Comment on their comments and start a discussion. You can also make meditation buddies.

Read Good Stuff: Reading is a must for every meditator, it gives you a chance to explore the depths of your intellect and bring out the power you see in meditation to reality. Read books, blogs … anything cool.

Make Meditation Corner: It’s a great idea to dedicate a part of your room/home/garden to meditation. You need not to do anything to that part, just make space for you to sit, stand or laying down. You are good to go. You can try our guide to minimalist meditation corner.

Collect Music for Meditation: Nothing is more popular then music to go with Meditation. It’s amazing how it enhances our experience of meditation. Try our Ultimate Guide to Meditation with Music or Guide to Meditation with Rock Music!

Travel: Go on holidays, discover new places, meet new people. You will develop compassion which is very essential to take your meditative state to next level.

Yoga: Meditation is integral part of Yoga. Practice yoga and see your life transforming.

Those were cool tips. Weren’t they? Wait! Before you go add your 2 cents: Do you have a tip to share with others? Do you follow some or all tips I shared here?

Easy way to remind yourself to meditate.

So you’ve heard this very much on this blog, sometimes in comments section and sometimes in the posts that Meditating at a fixed time everyday helps. As in my case, I don’t meditate like this. I meditate whenever I feel like – Sometimes morning, sometimes afternoon and sometimes at night.

But recently I found out an amazing technique with which now I meditate every morning. It also helped me to clear up my mind before I went to give my exams. So what is this amazing technique?

The technique is a simple task of setting up a reminder on your cell phone! Yes, you read it correct – Setting up a reminder on your cell phone! Just put up a reminder, and if you remember or not that you have to meditate, it’ll surely help you!

How this works?

The reason behind the working of this technique is that when you see the reminder that you have set, your brain takes it as an order. Not like an order which you don’t like, but as an order that you’ll be curious to do! When you’ll see the remainder you will feel to do that thing. That’s how our brain works.

You can’t understand what I am saying until you do it yourself. This is worth an experience. So take your cell phone, put up a reminder of whichever time you want to meditate and just be relaxed that you don’t have to bother about it!

PS: It will work best if you’ll put up a reminder of a morning session.

PPS: For all those young mediators, who don’t have a cell phone yet, you can put up a sticky note / Post-it notes at a place where you’ll see it at the time you want to meditate!

Have a hard time finding nice places to meditate? Here are coolest places ever. Add your suggestion to the list.

Don’t think that you have a place to meditate? You do. Trust me.

You can meditate anywhere, anytime. The choice is yours. Remember it’s not what the body’s doing; it’s whatever is occurring in the mind.

Meditation is going within. Whether on a crowded subway platform or in your secluded backyard, meditation can be practiced.

Don’t be concerned with the amount of time spent meditating during some of these periods. Your trip to the bathroom might not last 2 minutes but practice directing the mind. Your meditations become stronger every second you devote to meditation.

Here are 16 places where you can meditate. When you’re at the doctor’s office put the magazines away!

When waiting at the doctor’s office. Forget the magazines.

Waiting on line shopping. The gossip rags are mental junk food. The Snickers bars are real junk food. Ignore both.

When stopped in traffic. Instead of flipping out, go inward.

At half-time of a sporting event. You can get at least 10 minutes of down time during most sporting events.

During commercials while watching TV. You’ve seen them already. Most are boring as is.

After you’ve put dinner in oven you can meditate in the kitchen. This can help to promote mindful eating.

In bed when you wake up. Before your thoughts run away from you, watch them. They’re just thoughts.

In bed before you go to sleep. An awesome time to let your thoughts slow down while reprogramming your subconscious mind.

In bed before a mid-day nap. No better way to start a nap.

While waiting for a train. Stop looking at your watch. The train isn’t concerned about you. Don’t you know that everything happens in the Now anyway!

While going for a walk. Exercise your body. Let your mind empty.

When walking to the bathroom at work. Instead of worrying about that big conference call coming up, watch yourself worrying over the conference. You are not your thoughts, feelings, or body. You are awareness attending to these things. Learn to meditate during particularly stressful days, and allow your stress to leave you.

While eating. Two words: Mindful eating.

While writing a blog post………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..sorry guys! I’m back

While at a picnic. Enjoy the food. Enjoy the scenery. Enjoy observing your thoughts and feelings. Enjoy the Moment.

While lifting weights. I take about a 60 second break between sets. A perfect time for mindfulness.

On your rooftop – at sunrise. Ah!

While listening to music.

While Cycling

Where do you meditate? C’mon! Add to the list…

A Love Letter to Meditation Rocks! Readers of Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the awesome and beloved readers of Meditation Rocks! I know you have plans and valentine for today so I won’t take long. Just a quick message I wanted to share.

This day we acknowledge presence of a loved one in our lives. We tell them how important they are and how much they mean to us. Our hearts are full of gratitude and love. It’s such a wonderful gift in itself.

So why limit it to one person? Why not spread the love? Today do some small things that show your love towards others. Here are some tips:

Instead of forwarding text messages, write personal one and appreciate their one genuine quality.

Write a blog post thanking people for their support. (If you have a blog)

Call up long lost friends and tell them how much they mean to you.

Listen.

Draw greeting cards instead of buying. Bad at drawing? Take some colours and sheets and try making one together. It’s my promise that you will treasure it forever.

Go close to nature with your loved one.

Meditate with your loved one.

Write them a poem.

Donate the money you intended to buy a gift for – donate it together.

Gift them a nice book.

5 and more ways Meditation can upgrade your mind.

Are you always looking for tools and ways to sharpen my mind? To bring out the best of your mind? To make best use of your mind?

I mean, won’t it be wonderful if you could solve that math equation, be calm at places and situations where everyone else would have panic, read and understand nice books, write, share and so much more? Then hell you are so much like me!

Sharpen The Saw

I remember the story two woodcutters went to forest and one of them started chopping right away and the other one spend hours sharpening his axe. At the end of the day, the one who sharpened his saw ended up with more wood than the one who didn’t and was, obviously, less tired and earned more bucks!

So it’s always wise to sharpen your saw –sharpen your mind and we are going to use the method of Meditation. This is so important that Stephen Covey has devoted a full habit in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Or The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens if you are one.

Calm the Storm – Seeing Beyond Chaos

I gotta do this, I have to finish this up, I am running late! I AM SCERWED UP!!! Sounds familiar?

Well we all go through these storms every day. Everything seems to have a secret pact with the lords of chaos and they all seem to be after us. And things get frustrating and discouraging when nothing seems to move.

Meditation comes to rescue. You will become calm day by day, you will see patterns in chaos – patterns of thoughts and habits which are not serving you well. You will have that wisdom and clarity to see them and say to yourself, “This habit/thought got to go for my own well being.” And as the dust settles, you will see even more.

Never Dying Passion – Getting Things Done With Ease

Knowing the root of the problem is another thing and having the power to change is another. And let me be honest with you – will power does nothing! I mean you decide to wake a early, motivate yourself and even do it for a week and after that… what? Will power is gone and so is everything that came along.

We need that force that comes from within and never dies, that passion which builds up slowly. We need that stuff – does it ever happen to you that there is something, a thought, habit etc. , which you inculcated in your life effortlessly while others try to struggle to move even an inch? What is that soft power that places it in? That’s power of sub-conscious mind.

People try harder and harder to make it happen and it actually never happens. But once it gets in the sun-conscious mind – it’s done. I love what Ryan says about this:

Try hard, and you’ll have to try harder. ~RBs Keys

So do we evoke this power? How do we go placing that thought in sun-conscious mind? – Meditation! And results, I promise, will start slow, will be natural and transformational in the long run. You will look back and say – Whoa man! Was I that person?

Efficiency in Handling Thoughts

I remember friends complaining that they have stuff in mind, they know the answer, they have the ideas but somehow they can’t put them together in a nice way or just can’t express them in a flow. One of the major causes is inefficiency to handle the thoughts, when thoughts think you rather than you thinking the thoughts. And that too my friend can be changed by Meditation.

You will be able to put all your thoughts nicely. They will come in a formation like birds and they will come at speed and shape that you want. And I know, for some people it sounds too good to be true but ask those who are meditating since years even months, it’s wonderful how they have changed over years.

Understanding Opposing Ideas

My twitter friend sent me this message on twitter:

…I believe that if every one mediated 5 minutes a day THE WORLD WOULD CHANGE for the better! – CharlieBrown949

And I cannot agree more. All those tensions, feeling of insecurity, terrorism and intolerance of opposing ideas comes from the place where we can’t understand or respect individuality of other’s consciousness, let alone have peace with it.

But you can be a peacekeeper. Not only will it serve the whole society but it will serve you at much deeper levels. You will begin to understand things, people more clearly. No more –“I can never get this person.” Or “This person is a pain in the neck” because you understand that there are as many point of views as many people there are and it is good because that makes you special.

Bring Out The Talent

“I was very good with guitar but then I stopped learning.” I’ve heard this from many of my friends and when I ask them why they have numerous reasons from ‘unsupportive parents’ to ‘unmanageable life’ and trust me none of these are true! Because you know it in the heart that you knew when you were leaving it that you have the power to not only come back but continue learning and bring out the talent.

And with the hope of returning someday you turned away and when will be the time to go back? Someday. And when will be the someday?

Let me tell you the secret to making that someday as close as a month if not today – Meditate.

Conclusion

I can go on, really! For there is no end to the ways meditation upgrades your mind and then there is personality, relations, emotions and so on. And most of them are not even know – it just happens.

If you have started mediating and have experienced some good things then let me know in comments or via mail or better share it here with readers like Manav did.

So if you think you cold use an upgrade (this is totally free for God’s sake!) go find a technique on this blog that suits you or find a book. And start meditating.

Close your eyes, feel your breath ~ meditate.

Namaste.

@paulocoelho

Name: Paulo Coelho

About Him: Many people tell me that his books are ‘though provoking’ but I say that’s an understatement. His work is source of inspiration for me since ages. There is not a single word he utters that is not overflowing with inspiration. He, once, inspired me to write something (can’t say it’s an article) which is still most popular among FRiEnDz magazine readers.
